Mr Rico Van Staden

SACMA President

Rico van Staden studied BEng Mining at the University of Pretoria. He graduated in 1998 and started his mining career at Tshikondeni mine in 1998 as a Miner as part of his graduate in training programme. He went through the stages of Shift Boss and Mine Overseer and Production Manager after obtaining his Mine Managers Certificate of Competency. 

His career took him to Grootegeluk Coal Mine, Sishen Iron Ore Mine, Exxaro Coal Head Office and Mayoko Iron Ore in the Republic of the Congo, where he worked respectively as Mining Superintendent, Manager Mining, Manager Coal Strategy and Business Unit Manager. 

His drive towards Zero Harm lead him to join SACMA in 2002 where he first represented the Limpopo Region and later on became a member of council. He served on the Board of Examiners for the Mine Manager Certificate in 2013.

Rico lead the 2012 Coalsafe which was the first one to be held at Emperors Palace

Currently he is the Operations Manager at Grootegeluk Coal which is situated between the Matimba and Medupi power stations. 

His qualifications include: B.Eng Mining and later a M. Eng Project Management from the University of Pretoria, MBA (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University, Post Graduate Diploma in Futures Studies and Private Pilot License.

He is currently the President of the South African Colliery Manager’s Association He also serves as Chairperson of the Limpopo Opencast Regional Tripartite Forum.

Rico is an avid endurance athlete and takes part in the Comrades marathon and Ironman events. Rico beliefs in strong family values and is a father of a boy and two girls. He is married to Anita.
